Third SHELF project

Our third SHELF project is.........................!!
Cooking show video! It's totally different  than other cooking shows. There is some meaning and that is our point of third SHELF project. We made handmade cake together showing whole of process to make it from the beginning to the end. (and we were eating it together haha)

There are 5 members in my group (3 men and 2 women), All three of men have never made cake before. So they were full of mistakes putting the cream on the cake  at first,  but it was absolutely hilarious. We were making the cake together singing 'One day more'. Finally, we made it quite perfect shaped and... eat together haha.

The reason that we decided to do it for our third SHELF project is to celebrate the last day of our ENG 250 class. ( The next day was 성권's birthday as well..!! kkk )

We have prepared this SHELF project as a gift for our professor Jeff and all students attended.
We would like to say thank you for all of your time and hard work during the semester.

I'm missing you all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are you learning and/or practicing English in a meaningful way?

I am sure that yes, I'm  always learning and practicing English in my daily life in a meaningful way. If you look around carefully, there are a lot of changes to be able to learn very useful English expressions, not to sit and study for hours.
In my case, I'm always listening carefully what people said and wondering which words and phrases are using on a different situations.

Like what different people have differenct ideas, they have different ways to express their thought and emotion. So, First of all, listen their conversation and learn from them I haven't ever known (or fresh ideas). Second,  imitate their words and make it my own words. I'm trying to use the words imitated in my daily life until I speak natually.

So, you'd better be careful of me, I'm always watching you lol!!!

Effort - how much time and energy you spend (don’t be shy about documenting your effort)

English is always beside me. Even I'm always doing self-talk in English from morning to evening. This is the way to do. First, remind of a situation. It would be  included the old days or the fastasy world made from you. Second, play a role. If you imagin a situation,  you can be a main charactor of your world. So you are playing in the world talking anything in mind.

It's quiet easy to do, but it sometimes makes people embarrassed. Here is one of my real story. One day, on my way to school, I was more absorbed than ever in my own world in a bus. I've thought i was doing self-talk only in my mind,  but I was unconsciously speaking by myself. A passenger next to me was looking at me in a very stange way and moved his seat. I was a little bit shy at that time, but I have never stop my self-talk studying :).

Second SHELF project with One Day More Les Miserables

It is linked to my second SHELF project video.
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2roon6_les-miserables-eng250-shelf-project_music

+ 관훈, thank you for your technical support, editting and making this video whole day.

Finally, we have completed our second SHELF project. Yeah!!!
It was so amazingly interesting assignment I've ever been in college. We were so much passionated each role and we did it.

<  My Les Miserables team >

It was my first challenge to do musical and even I haven't watched Les Miserables before. So I downloaded  and watched it several times, and now it became one of my favorite musical. When we were recording musical video at school, my friend 관훈 and 카트리나 helped us a lot how to sing and carry the emotion of a song's lyrics becuase they have previously experience some musicals. I would love to try doing another musical together in the future <3

I played a role Eponine. She represents unrequited love. It was really difficult to express feelings like heart break and painful and sing together.
Eponine, she is so amazing woman. She always tried to gain his attections  and died for him in the end. I don't know how hard she was, but I am sure if i were Eponine, I would tell Marius I love him and break connection between Marius and Cosette. Becuase I don't want to regret in the future. Anyway, who can blame her sacrifice.

+ I can learn this proverbs

As Latin proverb is, 'A woman dares all things when she loves or hates.'
It is similar with 'But for love, a woman could do anything.'

One day more lyrics

[VALJEAN]

One day more
Another day, another destiny
This never-ending road to Calvary
These men who seem to know my crime
Will surely come a second time
One day more

[Marius]
I did not live until today
How can I live when we are parted

[VALJEAN]
One day more

[Marius & Cosette]
Tomorrow you'll be worlds away
And yet with you, my world has started

[Eponine] One more day all on my own
[Marius & Cosette] Will we ever meet again

[Eponine] One more day with him not caring

[Marius & Cosette] I was born to be with you
[Eponine] What a life I might have known
[Marius & Cosette] And I swear I will be true
[Eponine] But he never saw me there

[Enjolras] One more day before the storm
[Marius] Do I follow where she goes
[Enjolras] At the barricades of freedom
[Marius] Shall I join my brothers there
[Enjolras] When our ranks begin to form
[Marius] Do I stay and do I dare
[Enjolras] Will you take your place with me

[Everyone] The time is now, the day is here

[VALJEAN] One day more

[JAVERT]

One more day to revolution
We will nip it in the bud
We'll be ready for these schoolboys
They will wet themselves with blood

[VALJEAN] One day more

[Mr. & Mrs. THENARDIER]
Watch 'em run amuck Catch 'em as they fall
Never know your luck When there's a free for all
Here a little `dip'
There a little `touch'
Most of them are goners
So they won't miss much

[Students]
One day to a new beginning (Raise the flag of freedom high)
Every man will be a king (Every man will be a king)
There's a new world for the winning (There's a new world to be won)

[Everyone] Do you hear the people sing

[Marius] My place is here, I fight with you
[VALJEAN] One day more

[Marius & Cosette] I did not live until today

[Eponine] One more day all on my own
[Marius & Cosette] How can I live when we are parted
[JAVERT(overlapping)]

I will join these people's heros
I will follow where they go
I will learn their little Secrets
I will know the things they know

[VALJEAN] One day more
[Marius & Cosette] Tomorrow you'll be worlds away
[Eponine] What a life I might have known
[Marius & Cosette] And yet with you my world has started

[Javert(overlapping)]
One more day to revolution
We will nip it in the bud
We'll be ready for these Schoolboys

[THENARDIERS(overlapping)]

Watch 'em run amok
Catch 'em as they fall
Never know your luck
When there's a free-for-all

[VALJEAN]
Tomorrow we'll be far away
Tomorrow is the judgement day

[Everyone]
Tomorrow we'll discover What our God in Heaven has in store
One more dawn
One more day
One day more

Is marriage necessary or not in today's society ?

Is marriage necessary or not in today's society?

This topic is going to be discussed with my friends on hangout this coming Thursday! The main purpose that I choose this topic as my final exam quadrathalon is to see how they think about 'leather spinster or bachelor'?

+The leather spinster means who think I'm a happily unmarried straight woman and proud of it. It was first used in the late 80s by sucessful American careerwomen who didn't feel the urge or need to add marriage and it's components to thir lives.

+Leather Spinkster Origins:
http://leatherspinsters.com/leatherspinsters_origin.html

I believe marriage is no longer necessary, especially today's society. As individualism develops, society becomes bleak and the more and more people want to enjoy their own life. So, many young men and women are postponing marriage. (There would be many different reasons why they're postponing marriage. I would like to discuss them with my friends.)

I think that is because.... of self-improvement.
                                        of getting a job.
                                        of saving money.
they cannot find my life partner.

According to the data, the number of marriages in Korea keeps decreasing since it had peaked in 1984. In addition, most men and women seem to marry during the start of nearly their 30s.

It means women are having children later in life. Women 35 and order have more difficulty getting preganant and health baby. If we solve this problem, of course, we should encourage marriage at first. But we can discuss about the risk and measure of them, too.

+ I found a good expression.

Most experts would say there's no one right time to start a family. But there are both advantages and disadvantages to giving birth at different ages: In your 20s, you'll have more energy to run after and care for your child but fewer financial resources and less personal life experience on which to draw; in your late 30s and 40s you may be more established financially but have a tougher time getting and staying pregnant and, afterward, keeping up with an active baby and toddler.

Second shadow reading - Oprah Winfrey Harvard Commencement speech

Oprah Winfrey Harvard Commencement speech | Harvard Commencement 2013

23:45~ 24:47

This is my second shadow reading with Opra Winfrey who is best known for hosting her own internationally popular talk show. I take some videos rather than audio stereo in order to show you the process of my shadow reading and the changes : voice, intonation and even my script. So I hope you enjoy it (:

-Introduction video

-Before shadow reading

The speech script: I know that you all might have a little anxiety now and hesitation about leaving the comfort of college and putting those Harvard credentials to the test. But no matter what challenges or setbacks or disappointments you may encounter along the way, you will find true success and happiness if you have only one goal. There really is only one, and that is this: To fulfill the highest, most truthful expression of yourself as a human being. You wanna max out your humanity by using your energy to lift yourself up your family and the people around you. Theologian Howard Thurman said it best. He said, “Don’t ask yourself what the world needs, Ask yourself what makes you come alive and then go do that because what the world needs is people who have come alive”

My Dubsmash selfie video

This is my first Dubsmash selfie video!! Dubsmash is a mobile app to creat short selfie videos dubbed with famous sounds. It's a fabulous app. It's fresh, varied and even fun. In addition, It is great method to practice expressing my feelings through facial expression as well. Becuase Korean society is closed, while that of Amarica is open, It was very difficult for me to do expressing my emotions only with the facial expression. (But I've totally tried putting a little more my expression on it.) Anyway, now I'm almost adapted to use and I'm enjoying to take many many Dubsmash selfie videos without any difficulties. I'm going to upload much more of my selfie videos! I hope you enjoy to watch my videos and... let's SHARE our Dubsmash video together (:!!!

reflection of mock interview

Today, I had mock job interview in the class. I've intended to upload recording video file on my blog, but I decided not to do becuase you will laught at me XD! Interview always makes me nervous and I repeat my mistakes again and again. I hope it will be dwindling. So, let's look at my mistates!

First, I'm fast talker. Generally, I was talking too fast and it did not make senses at all. I need to emphasis to some words and pauses between words and phrases.
Give me an example with the real interivew answer of mine.

"Can you give me an example how you are optimistic?"

"Ah...Even though i took the hardship/ i just took/ everything in a positive (way)/ and  i can deal  with/ in a good way /with my positive mind./ Everything, i just thinking /in a good way/ with my positive thinking of my mind.

Yeah, i know this is a terrible answer but i should face the facts...): If I express this answer with "Even if i face hardship along my way, i must never give up and keep try to do my best with my positive thinking of my mind", it would be better.

Second, mistake some words. It's quiet simple, but i need to reconfirm my vocabulary again.
cameover(X) overcame(O)
opstidious(X) fastidious(O)
fastidious    꼼꼼한, 철저한  (=strict, meticulous)

+ I realized the necessity of extending my vocabulary when I speak in English.

It was very interesting and meaningful time to think carefully about my future and prepare the interview.

Job Hunting Part#1, Tell Me About Yourself

https://youtu.be/OW-yxxPMtro

Today, I had job interview in my class, recording me on video with help from my partnet. The first question was 'Tell me about yourself'. It sounds very simple question at first, but it was totally not.  I spoke incoherently from beggining to the end and repeated the word.

Let's check it together...

Friend: Tell me about yourself.

Me: My name is Cho yeonji. I'm currently studying at the Busan University of Foregin studies and major in Enlgish & Vietnamese. I have lots of practical experiences in this part. I had applied for the KOICA last year. I had worked as an interpreter for cooperation, international business in Vietanam. With my pratical experinece from the past, I believe I'm the most adaptive person in this field. I'm flexible and adaptive well in any circustances. Even if i encounter hardship along the way, I never give up and keep trying to do best. In the end I've always got good result. I will never fail to your expectations.

I don't know what did i say.... My mind just went blank when I was talking at the same time. Anyway, I found two problems in my interview. The first problem was I didn't mention which company and field do i apply for. Second, Eye contact. I always limite my eye contact to the upper side, not in front of me. I had not reconized that I avoided the camara, but I could find this problem by hangout after I look at it, at first. I need to break my habit! (I have tried to do but I think i have a fear of camara, especailly It feels strange when i looked at my own reflection on the screen.)

So, I introduce a video for you which is interview skills questions and answers tutorial. You need to understand  what is the intention in asking this question before you answer. This video will help you to understand what 'Tell me about yourself' means and the good answers! Let's taining together :)

First SHELF Project with Sia - Elastic Heart

This is my First SHELF project video :https://youtu.be/NWXlDqUlCP0

I had done my first SHELF project with Sia- Elastic Heart, analyzing and discussing this music video with my friends on hanogut. Sia, no longer shows her face in public, is one of the biggest musical geniuses in Hollywood. She is the Australian singer/songwriter. I love her husky voice, song, even her costume with a distincitive style.

The music video of Elastic- Heart, feat. Shia LaBeouf & Maddie Ziegler, has been a controversy becuase some people think it's kind of child pronography and very thin line between art and paedophilia. Why people calling Shia a pedophile? Shia and Maddie aren't performing sextual activities... ): Dancing is a very intimate thing to do. Maybe becuase their nude colored outfits might be caused this problem. Why they decided to perfrom with wearing the nude colored outfits, then? One of my friend answered to this question that Sia wants to attract the attention on the dancing and not on what they're wearing. I'm totally in agreement (:
If I try to see this music video as a art form, it would be easy to understand her intention.

Maddie is obviously gifted dancer. She is now 12-year-old... Wow..!! Can you imagine?
She is in the spotlight becuase of her incredible dance and expression in music video, Sia- Chandelier and Elastic Heart.  I'm always immersed in her dance !

In this video, Maddie is definitely more wile and crazy than Shia. Shia is so much more composed and in control of his movement. Some people say Maddie and Shia are family and some people not.
But the truth is Maddie and Shia are essentionally the same person in this video. They are the different scopes of Sia's mind. Maddie could be her soft, innocent, childlike side, and Shia could be her rough, strong and serious side. There are times in her life when she fight with herself. She also can not get rid of a part of herself. That's what's happening when Maddie tries to leave the cage without Shia. She can't leave because she is a part of who she is no matter how hard she tries to get rid of her.

Whenever i see her music video, It feels like a musical art. Sia is amazing artist. I can't wait for her new song and the next video !

First shadow reading :How to improve your English Speaking and Fluency

A Lame-Ass Offer - Erin Brockovich (6/10) Movie CLIP (2000) HD

How do i get really good at speaking Enlgish fluently?
1.Listen to a lot of English.
2. Prononciation is very important.
3. Lots of speaking practise.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYS5RgeI6hI

Today, I learned "Shadow Speaking" in my class. What Shadow Speaking is? It means to shadow the video or CD, that is to speak with and copy its. I think this is quitet interesting and the best way to improve my Enlgish Speaking level more than anything else.

I chose above a video , "A Lam-Ass Offer- Erin Brockovich" , to practice shadowing speaking. In order to compare before with after, I recorded my voice using my smart phone. The most impressive thing was that I could feel the speaker's mind and her emotion with imitating her words. After practicing, i can totally feel much difference between before and after the way of my talking in Enlgish.

I would like to share this nice study method with you, improving English Speaking level like native speaker!

My SHELF Project

As my SHELF project, I'd like to make "Korea-English language learning video" introducing specific situations or occasions and practicing useful expressions and phrase which is suitable in that moment.
I've wanted to make my own video like this for a long time ago but I really needed someone's help with editing video and adding subtitle to complete the work. That's why I have hesitated such a long time even still now. But I really want to try to make this video in this time. Not a force, as my own will!

The following videos inspired me these ideas, one is from English Central website and the other is from YOUTUBE, with confidence and it will be the base on producing my SHELF project  video.

France votes to ban ultra-thin models in eating disorder crackdown

Have you ever seen fat barbie dolls? It has also called as plus-sized barbie dolls.
When i watched this news video,on the upper side, in the class,  I've reminded the fat barbie doll which was a worldwide sentation last year. I think the way people think  has changed a lot! It could not make sense at all, if i were born in a long years ago. Isn't it ineresting?

In the past, most images of models were 10-30 percent underweigh. But currently it's easier to see plus-sized models and it's going around you, such as Laura wells, Crystal Renn, Jennie Runk and Gee Yang Kim(김지양) who is the first plus-sized model in South Korea that have strick standards of their apperance. What a nice and pretty woman she is!

1. Models would have to present a doctor's certificate saying that they were at a healthy enough weight to work. (anyone employing models who was employing people without such a certificate would be penalized)

the law is that all models would have to at least within the normal weight not the underweight range.

Grieving parents of Korean ferry victims start long march

http://www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20150404000084

Newly shaven-headed and clad in white mourning robes the grieving parents of the victims of last year's Sewol ferry disaster began a marathon march Saturday to press for an independent inquiry into the tragedy.

Families of those who died in the Sewol ferry accident start a march from Ansan, Gyeonggi Province on Saturday. Yonhap

More than 200 people are participating in the march from Ansan city to the capital Seoul, mostly the parents of the 250 students from the same high school who perished when the overloaded ferry sank off the southern island of Jindo on April 16.

With the first anniversary of the tragedy drawing near, the 35 kilometer march is being held to call for the sunken ferry to be brought to the surface to recover those bodies still unaccounted for.

The marchers started off from a public park in Ansan where a giant altar to the victims, complete with their black-ribboned portraits and flowers, has been in place over the past year.

Some wept as they set off carrying pictures of their daughters and sons.
Before the march started, many parents shaved their heads in a show of grief and determination.

They chanted slogans and held banners alleging that the government was "insulting"  victims' families by "waving money under their noses" instead of seeking to ensure a thorough and independent investigation.

Over the past year, families have repeatedly staged street protests and sit-ins, demanding a meeting with President Park Geun-Hye and urging her to deliver on her promise to continue the search for those still missing.

"Almost a year has passed since the tragedy but the president has not delivered on her promise. We are going to Seoul to hear from her," said Chun Myeong-Sun, a representative of the families.

The accident--blamed by many on regulatory failings, official incompetence and the ship's illegal redesign--prompted Park to vow a complete overhaul of national safety standards.

Following months of political bickering, the South Korean parliament passed a bill in November initiating an independent investigation into the sinking.

But relatives have accused the government of seeking to hamper the probe and contain any political fallout by appointing government officials to key posts in the 17-member inquiry committee.

Committee chairman Lee Suk-Tae--one of the members nominated by the families--said this week that the government, which should be the very subject of the investigation, was seeking to lead the committee, something he labelled "unacceptable."

More than 50 people have been put on trial on charges linked to the sinking, including 15 crew members--who were among the first to climb into lifeboats.

The Sewol's captain was jailed in November for 36 years for gross negligence and dereliction of duty, while three other senior crew members were sentenced to jail terms of between 15 and 30 years.

The families plan to hold a candle-lit vigil when the protest march arrives in Seoul on Sunday. (AFP)

Parents of ferry disaster victims refuse state reparation plan

A group of parents of some of the high school students killed in a ferry accident last year lambasted the government’s reparation plans on Thursday, demanding a thorough probe into the accident’s causes and the recovery of the sunken ship instead.

In a rally at the Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul, the parents shaved their heads to protest what they called the “government’s unilateral decision to pay reparations against the parents’ wishes.”

“We have never asked for money,” said Yoo Gyoung-geun, a family spokesman who lost his daughter in the disaster.

Relatives of the victims of the Sewol ferry disaster shave their heads in Gwanghwamun Square in downtown Seoul, Thursday. (Yonhap)

“All we ask is that the ferry be towed out from the sea, so that those still missing can be found and that officials fully investigate the cause of the disaster,” Yoo added.

The 6,800-ton passenger ferryboat Sewol sank in waters off southwestern Korea last April, killing 304. Nine are still missing. Most of those killed were students of Danwon High School at Ansan, Gyeonggi Province, an industrial town south of Seoul.

The Oceans Ministry announced Wednesday that the government would pay about 720 million won ($657,000) to every family that lost a child in the disaster. The costs were tallied by taking into account the foregone wages of the teenagers who had not lived to be adults.

Families said Thursday’s conference was organized to express their “utter disgust” at such plans.

“Do you think it’s just going to be OK if you throw money at us?” one mother yelled in anger. “Why do we have to be the ones suffering on the streets? What have we done to deserve this?”

Most of the fathers remained silent, their eyes closed, with looks of both despair and determination.

Supporters of the families shaved the heads of about 50 parents. Some of the mothers started weeping as their long wavy hair slowly fell to the gray asphalt streets of downtown Seoul.

The families also demanded the government give more authority to a special investigative committee formed earlier this year to investigate the disaster’s causes.

The committee was formed after the bereaved families refused to accept the results of earlier prosecutorial and parliamentary probes, saying they were insufficient.

The committee’s mandate, written by the government last month, would put investigators under the close watch of the Oceans Ministry, which some families accuse of avoiding responsibility for the accident. It comes into effect next Monday.

Some of the families, and 10 of the 17 members on the probe committee have strongly urged the government to revise the mandate.

“I will not give up,” one mother said, her voice quivering as tears rolled down her cheeks. “I will not allow myself to see my son in heaven and tell him that I’m sorry.”

“I will make sure I’m able to look him in the eyes and tell him that I did my part.”

Working to become ‘communication experts’

http://www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20140423000941

Each year, hundreds of students knock on the doors of graduate schools of interpretation and translation. With the prolonged economic slump and jobless rate virtually at a standstill, many students are seeking to acquire skills that will prevail regardless of the economic situation.

“It is very difficult for our generation to get a job, and I thought becoming a professional (interpreter) would give me the upper hand in the labor market,” said a 22-year-old surnamed Shin.

She said the benefits of becoming a freelance interpreter included control over her own work hours.

Like Shin, many students and former office workers spend months and even years trying to enter graduate schools of interpretation and translation at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies and Ewha Womans University, the top schools in the field.

While some interpreters complain of a shortage of work due to the “excessive” number of newcomers, many language majors consider the job a surefire way to maximize one’s expertise.

Choi Ju-eun, a 23-year-old English major, said the most valuable part of being an interpreter is that you get to keep studying English.

“Translation is a job where you have to constantly be ‘awake.’ You have to retain your general knowledge of social issues and you need to have a will to learn new things every time you take on a project,” said 30-year-old Won Jee-hee.

According to Won, a former researcher for local think tank the Institute of Convention and Exhibition Management, most desk jobs force employees to do the same thing over and over again. Repeatedly doing identical tasks prevents workers from polishing their skills.

While translation is an attractive job to many, applying one’s language skills to deliver someone’s ideas to another person remains a tall order.

“One thing I always noticed was, when I spoke to a native speaker, he or she always seemed to react differently to my expectations. This was because I would just put together vague ideas and say it in English,” said former law major Lee Seong-il, who is studying to become a professional interpreter.

Lee Chang-yong, who runs a language institute in Gangnam, southern Seoul, said the key to translation is to grasp a clear idea of what one has to translate.

“The essence of interpretation is the interpreter; he or she has to comprehend the content, change it into the target language and put it in words that are logical and make sense,” he said.

Lee’s CY English operates preparatory courses for entrance exams for HUFS and Ewha University interpretation and translation schools, which he said prepare students to become “communication experts.” The initial courses focus on training students to actually use the language skills acquired through years of studying.

Many experts in Korea point to the lack of speaking and writing lessons in English education. This is mainly because the English tests in the college entrance exam consist of listening, reading and grammar sections, but not speaking or writing.

Lee said students are trained to accept English knowledge rather than to use it.

“The shift to output-based thinking is the first step toward training to become an interpreter,” he said.

According to Lee, the key to interpretation is organizing ideas well.

“No matter how many words you have memorized, or how much text you’ve read, if means nothing if you cannot use it.”

As my dream is to be an interpreter, called communication experts, this article completely caught my eyes.I'm planning to enter graduate school of monterey in USA, studying for professional ability of translation. In Korea, there is no official license to enter the interpretation market. But getting a degree from a graduate school is regarded as a necessary step to start an interpretation career and build a network of interpreters and clients.

Recently, there are so many people speaking English and other foreign language that many people easily say that you can become an interpreter if you speak a foreign language. However, it is not true.
Interpreters are a person who have mastered a foreign language as well as have cultural understanding, analytical acumen, technical knowledge and even social skills. So, it goes for beyond the linguistic aspect.

To be communication expert is very difficult. At first time, I didn’t even know where to start studying so that was to be a big pressure on me. Looking back on it now, I was rushing to do it...

I’d like to make study group. if you guys are interested in communication skill or someone who has same goal like me, please contact me and let me know you!
